People among whom we work

The Parish extends over 54 villages around Yirol town. The population of the area that may reach half a million in number is mainly composed of people of two Dinka clans: Atuot and Jang. The Dinka people are the largest group in South Sudan that have retained the pastoral life style: cattle keeping  as mainly activity, little agriculture, polygamy, etc. They have a strong sense of pride and honor that they defend usually through physical violence. They solve their problems in public forums but quite often we witness violence conflicts between tribes, clans and families.

The Dinka people are monotheists. They believe in Nhialic Madhol which means God Almighty. In between God and human beings there are spirits called Jok whose can be used by gifted people for the good or the wrong.
